The
Supreme Holy Office was founded in 1542 by Pope Paul III as a successor
to the former Inquisition. The modern Holy Office is one of two
successors to the original tribunal. It serves as the supreme
ecclesiastical tribunal of the United
Roman-Ruthenian Church. It is primarily an
appellate court. However, in some cases pertaining to certain matters
of faith and doctrine, it can serve as a court of first instance. The
Prefect of Faith and Doctrine serves ex-officio as the Chief Judge.
Formerly it was known as the Supreme Tribunal of the Prefecture of Faith and Doctrine. It reverted to the older name in 2022.
