THE TWELVE CHURCHES OF THE PATRIARCHATE
These churches are given special position because of their prominence in the history and patrimony of the Patriarchate of the Imperial Roman Church. The list of the churches forms a trail of pilgrimage throughout the territory of the Apostolic See and Pontifical States. Those who visit each church, recite a Pater Noster and an Ave Maria, and pray for the intentions of the Papa-Catholicos may be recognised with a special attestation.
In addition, it is also considered especially pious, whether part of a pilgrimage or not, to visit the specific churches on the feasts and Lenten days indicated and participate in liturgy.
The Twelve Churches are also noted and commemorated in papal masses on those days and optionally by other churches within the Imperial Roman Church. This is to demonstrate the historic and continuing linkage between each of those churches and the patrimony of the Imperial Roman Church.
