PONTIFICAL CHANCERY

HMEIRH the Very Rev. Gr.D.
Msgr. Douglas v. Aschaffenburg
Chancellor of the Pontifical Court

The Pontifical Chancery is a central office of the Patriarchal Curia of the United Roman-Ruthenian Church. Led by the Chancellor of the Pontifical Court, it serves as a key legal-administrative representative of the Roman-Ruthenian Pope and contributes significantly to the global life of the Church.

Founded on centuries of tradition, the Chancery safeguards the Church’s memory through record-keeping, preservation of legislative acts, and certification of official documents. In this role, the Chancellor acts as an ecclesiastical notary, ensuring accuracy, continuity, and accessibility in the Church’s governance. While non-jurisdictional, the office provides vital support and may also represent the Prince-Bishop of Rome-Ruthenia in certain delegated duties. Formally, it is housed within the First Section-General Affairs of the Pontifical Secretariat, the central administrative office of the Patriarchal Curia.

By virtue of his office, the Chancellor serves in both the Patriarchal Curia and the Pontifical Court. He also holds special responsibilities defined by Canon Law, including assuming the duties of the First Archdeacon when that office is vacant. The Chancellor likewise serves in the Noble Company of St. Mary of Walsingham. Councils, Commissions, and Committees, as well as certain other offices attached to the Curia and Court are typically under the oversight of the Chancery. The Chancellor's duties also include broad oversight of Section Section-State Affairs of the Secretariat, which includes the Document Office, Stephenian Archives, and Pontifical Apostolic Library.

Through this work, the Pontifical Chancery helps the Church continue in faith and tradition, both today and for generations to come.
