Baron (Pontifical Nobility)

A baron is an historical rank of nobility or a title of honor, which is maintained in the Pontifical Imperial State. It is often hereditary, but can be a life title. The female equivalent of a baron is a baroness. A baron ranks higher than a simple lord (signore) or knight, but lower than a viscount. Barons are entitled to an herealdic crown with 7 visible pearls. The term "baron" originated from the Latin word "baro," which was then adopted into Old French.
