Fanon (United Roman-Ruthenian Church)

The fanon, an old Germanic term for cloth, is a vestment exclusively reserved in the United Roman-Ruthenian Church for use by the Prince-Bishop of Rome-Ruthenia in liturgical dress. It is similar, but distinct from the form used by the Roman Pope and the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon.

The fanon consists of a single shoulder-cape, similar to a mozzetta, made of white fabric, either plain or with narrow woven golden stripes, creating an alternating white and gold pattern. The fanon is placed over the pianeta (dalmatic worn by bishops of the Gallo-Russo-Byzantine Rite) and under the cope and pallium. The front part of the fanon is ornamented with a small gold-embroidered cross.

The fanon is similar to an amice, but it is put on over the alb rather than under it.
