Holy Tradition is the living transmission of the apostolic faith in the Church through the Holy Spirit. It includes Holy Scripture and is expressed through the Creed, councils, Fathers, liturgy, canons, icons, and the continuing life of the faithful.
Scripture and Tradition
Orthodox and Catholic Christianity do not treat Scripture and authentic Tradition as rival sources. Scripture arose within the worshipping community and remains the uniquely inspired written witness within the wider apostolic life of the Church.
Tradition and customs
Holy Tradition must be distinguished from local or changeable traditions. Customs can serve the faith, but they are judged by their conformity to the Gospel and the catholic inheritance of the Church.
