The Mar Thoma Syrian Church is a reformed episcopal church within the Saint Thomas Christian heritage of India. It emerged from nineteenth-century reform within the Malankara tradition.
Character
The church preserves the West Syriac form of worship in a reformed shape while emphasizing biblical preaching, evangelism, and renewal. It maintains bishops in historic succession and is led by the Mar Thoma Metropolitan.
Ecumenical relationships
The Mar Thoma Church is not a member of the Oriental Orthodox communion. It has significant relationships with Anglican churches and participates actively in ecumenical organizations.
