Head of a prefecture of the Patriarchal Curia

A Prefect is the appointed head of a prefecture within the Patriarchal Curia. Prefects exercise defined responsibility over a particular field of ecclesiastical government, such as faith and doctrine, liturgy, education, administration, or charitable finance.

Roman-Ruthenian Canon Law provides that Prefects are prelates in the clerical state, including clerics in Minor Orders or those who have received the First Tonsure. A Prefect who is neither Cardinal nor Bishop is ordinarily appointed a Canon of the Patriarchal Chapter. The Prefect of Faith and Doctrine must be a consecrated Bishop.

Although prefectures form part of the Curia, their heads report directly to the Supreme Pontiff. The precise powers of each office derive from Canon Law, pontifical decree, and approved policy.
