Principal curial office for orthodoxy of faith and doctrine
The Prefecture of Faith and Doctrine is the principal doctrinal office of the Patriarchal Curia. It is responsible for matters of faith and doctrine throughout the Holy Apostolic See and its suffragan jurisdictions and for safeguarding the historic Orthodox and Catholic faith maintained by the United Roman-Ruthenian Church.
Its Prefect must be a consecrated Bishop and, unless already a Cardinal, is named a titular Archbishop of the Holy Apostolic See. The Prefect serves ex officio as Chief Judge of the Supreme Holy Office. The Council of the Clergy and the Council for Consecrated and Religious Life operate within the Prefecture.
The Prefectures of Liturgy and Education are subordinate congregations within this doctrinal structure. When the office of Prefect of Faith and Doctrine is vacant, its leadership is vested directly in the Supreme Pontiff.
