Archdeacon (Clergy of the United Roman-Ruthenian Church) An archdeacon is a senior/high-ranking cleric the United Roman-Ruthenian Church that is usually ordained as a priest or deacon. However, by practice the office may be held by a cleric of any rank. Each diocese or archdiocese may have a single archdeacon. The Patriarchal Curia also has a First Archdeacon, known as the First Archdeacon of the Apostolic See, whose function is to lead the Pontifical Secretariat. The archdeacon was the most senior diocesan position below a bishop. An archdeacon is often responsible for administrative duties within a diocese in support of the mission of the bishop, particularly in financial and administrative matters.
