Cleric ordained to the presbyterate
A priest, or presbyter, is a cleric ordained to preach the Gospel, celebrate the Eucharist and other sacraments entrusted to the presbyterate, offer pastoral care, and assist the Bishop in the governance and sanctification of the faithful.
In the United Roman-Ruthenian Church, priestly ministry is exercised within its Orthodox and Catholic apostolic tradition and according to the rite and jurisdiction in which the cleric serves. Priests may be secular clergy or members of religious communities; according to discipline and vocation, they may be married or celibate.
A priest is ordinarily styled Reverend Father. He remains subject to his competent ecclesiastical authority and to Canon Law. Priests may also hold offices such as Rector, Canon, Dean, Chancellor, or Prefect when lawfully appointed.
