The
priest prepares for the great Sacrifice by prayers, sacred songs and
readings from Holy Scripture.
PREPARATORY
PRAYERS AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR
Prayers
of humility, love, desire, contrition, and confidence.
THE
SIGN OF THE CROSS
The
priest, bowing down at the foot of the altar, makes the Sign of the
Cross, from his forehead to his breast, and says:
IN
nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.
Then
joining his hands before his breast, he begins the Anthem:
Sacerdos.
Introibo ad altare Dei.
Minister.
Ad Deum qui laetificat iuventutem meam. |
THE
PSALM 42 -- IUDICA ME
The
priest alternates with the server in reciting this psalm to express
his desire, joy and confidence in going to the altar of the
Sacrifice. In Masses for the Dead and from Passion Sunday till Holy
Saturday exclusively, this psalm is omitted.
S. Iudica
me, Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta: ab homine
iniquo, et doloso erue me.
M. Quia tu
es Deus fortitudo mea: quare me repulisti, et quare tristis incedo,
dum affligit me inimicus?

THE
PUBLIC CONFESSION
It
is an acknowledgement of his guilt before God and that of all others
assisting at the divine Sacrifice. Then, joining his hands, and
humbly bowing down, he says the Confiteor:

Michaeli Archangelo, beato Ioanni Baptistae, sanctis Apostolis Petro
et Paulo, omnibus Sanctis, et vobis fratres: quia peccavi nimis

&ldots;mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam
Mariam semper Virginem, beatum Michaelum Archangelum, beatum Ioannem

THE
PRIEST ASCENDS THE ALTAR
With
a prayer for pardon on his lips the priest ascends the altar, which
he kisses. First extending, then joining his hands, the priest says audibly Oremus (Let
us pray); then ascending to the altar, he says secretly:
Aufer
a nobis, quaesumus, Domine, iniquitates nostras: ut ad Sancta
sanctorum puris mereamur mentibus introire. Per Christum Dominum
nostrum. Amen.
His
hands joined, and bowing down over the altar, the priest says:
Oramus
te, Domine, per merita Sanctorum tuorum,
The
priest kisses the altar.
&ldots;quorum
reliquiae hic sunt, et omnium Sanctorum: ut indulgere digneris omnia

THE

blessing the incense the priest says:

THE
INTROIT
The
priest, signing himself with the Sign of the Cross, reads the
Introit of the day. (At the Masses for the Dead, the priest makes the
Sign of the Cross on the Missal.) Going to the center of the altar,
the priest and says:

OF INVOCATIONS ADDRESSED TO EACH OF THE THREE DIVINE PERSONS.
Then,
joining his hands, he says alternately with the ministers:

THE
GLORIA IN EXCELSIS
Standing
at the middle of the altar, extending and then joining his hands,and
bowing slightly, the priest says -- except during Lent and Advent and
in Masses for the Dead -- the Gloria in excelsis.
When he says the words: We adore Thee, We give Thee
thanks; Jesus Christ; and Receive our prayer, he
bows, and at the end he signs himself with the Sign of the Cross
from forehead to breast:

in excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias
agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis,

Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere

THE COLLECTS
Then
the priest kisses the altar, and turning to the people says:
S. Dominus vobiscum.
M. Et cum
spiritu tuo.
S. Oremus. |
A
Bishop may substitute "Pax Vobis" for
"Dominus Vobiscum" before the Collect
on days on which the Gloria is said. |
Here
follow the Collects. The Celebrant first says the Collect of the
Day, as appointed in the missal, and then the appointed Seasonal
Collects, any prayers ad libitum from the Table of Prayers or the
Section of Various Prayers, and then any appointed or discretionary
commemorations. The Collect of the Day is said under its own ending,
and the other prayers that follow it are joined together under one
ending. The ending, abbreviated Per Dominum.,
is Per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum
filium tuum. Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti,
Deus. Per omnia saecula saeculorum.
Variations to this are indicated in the Propers. The ending,
abbreviated Through., is
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with
thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God. World without
end. Variations to this are indicated in the Propers.
